1 The many choices and chances of Cain
Genesis 4

2 Genesis 4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to[c]you, but you must rule over it.”

3 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother
8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”

4 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother

5 3 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear
3 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.[e] 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.

7 What was the sin of Cain? A. Improper Sacrifice B. Murder C. Envy
D. Rebellion E. Pride

8 Cain was not rejected because of the type of sacrifice, but because of his heart.
1 John 3:  For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous.

9 “God always inspects the giver and the worshipper before He inspects the gift, service, or worship.” - Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., More Hard Sayings of the Old Testament

10 Abel went out of his way to worship God by giving his best
Abel went out of his way to worship God by giving his best. Cain merely discharged a duty.

11 What about us? When we Worship God with what is convenient rather than what is required? When we give God a “tip” instead of our all? When we do just enough to look “good”?

12 What is our motivation? For God to give us favor? For God to approve of us and put us on the “nice list”? To uphold religious or family tradition? Superstition?   As an example to our children? “It’s good for the kids”

13 “Our huffing and puffing to impress God, our scrambling for brownie points, our thrashing about trying to fix ourselves while hiding our pettiness and wallowing in guilt are nauseating to God and are a flat denial of the gospel of grace. Our approach to the Christian life is as absurd as the enthusiastic young man who had just received his plumber’s license and was taken to see Niagara Falls. He studied it for a minute and then said, “I think I can fix this.” - Brennan Manning

14 What is our motivation? For God to give us favor? For God to approve of us and put us on the “nice list”? To uphold religious or family tradition? Superstition?   As an example to our children? “It’s good for the kids”

15 If we see God in His fullness we can do nothing else than to sacrificially, fully give all we are and have to Him for His service.

16 King David 2 Sam 24:24  I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing.”

17 Vs. 5…So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
Instead of repenting and seeking to rectify the situation, Cain Got angry at God.

18 How do we respond when God says, “No”
How do we respond when God says, “No”? - Do we go to self inspection or become self righteous? - “I have been wronged!” “You have violated what is rightfully mine!” “I deserve better!” - Do we get envious of others do get a “yes”?

19 Vs. 6 If you do well, will you not be accepted?
Compliance Vs. Defiance

20

21 John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy

22 “Sin takes you farther than you want to go, keeps you longer than you want to stay and costs you far more than you intend to pay.”

23 We don’t know if Cain ever repented, but he was not beyond God’ grace.

24 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh
26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

25 1 Cor 12: 9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me   1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
