4 Families living in poverty have only about £10 per day per person to buy everything they need such as food, heating, toys, clothes, electricity and transport.

5 There are currently 3.9 million children living in poverty in the UK, that's almost a third of all children.

6 For those families in the bottom twenty percent of the income distribution, almost 1 in 5 can't afford to have their friends over for tea or a snack once a fortnight.

7 One third of British children are forced to go without at least one of the things they need, such as three meals a day or adequate clothing.

8 Over 90 percent of low income parents say they often go without to ensure their children have enough.

9 By the age of six, a less able child from a rich family is likely to have overtaken an able child born into a poor family.

10 Poor children are only a third as likely to get 5 GCSEs at A

12 What kind of Offender? Liam is a model student at school, always achieving his target grades and trying hard, his parents are very supportive and very proud of him. Some of his friends have started smoking cannabis in the local park at lunch time. Liam goes along with them so he doesn’t stand out from the crowd.

13 What kind of Offender? Stuart is bored. His family don’t have very much money and can’t buy him the latest games consoles or afford for him to go out. He spends most of his time hanging round on the streets with his mates. Together they vandalise property and intimidate local shopkeepers. 2 members of the gang have ASBO’s
