Mining coal Coal is mined at open cut or underground mines, then crushed, washed and transported to power stations to be stockpiled and used as fuel.

Most electricity is generated by spinning a turbine. The turbine is connected to a generator. Coal, oil, gas, biomass can be burned to boil water to make steam which turns the turbine.

The US has 6% of the world’s population, but uses 30% of the worlds energy. India has 20% of world’s population but uses only 2% of the world’s energy.
