Today’s goal LBJ’s administration began as he was sworn in as president on Air Force One in Dallas, waiting for John F. Kennedy’s casket to be loaded on the plane. He began his “War on Poverty” and other domestic improvements he called the “Great Society” He also continued JFK’s push for civil rights legislation. the Supreme Court, under Chief Justice Earl Warren, also had been busy in those years.

Vocabulary Lyndon Baines Johnson
Competitive and ambitious Texas Democrat who served as vice president under John F Kennedy. Known for his persuasive “LBJ treatment” which got other politicians to vote for what he wanted. Remember, this was Kennedy’s weak point and his reason for choosing Lyndon as his running mate. Was also useful in putting pressure on Southern Democrats.

1964, Congress enacted the EOA $1 Billion ($7.5 billion today) for…. Youth programs (Job Corps Youth Training Program) Anti-poverty measures (Community Action Program: poor people participating in public-works programs) Small-business loans, Job training Also created: Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA (a kind of peace corps for the needy parts of the US)) Project Head Start (education for underprivileged preschoolers)

Medicare provides hospital insurance and low-cost medical insurance for almost every American, aged 65 or older. Medicaid extends health insurance to welfare recipients (at or below the poverty line).

Warren Court Since the 1950s, SCOTUS, under Chief Justice Earl Warren, had made some landmark (significant) decisions. 1954, Brown v. Board of Education In the 1960s: Banned state-sanctioned prayer in public school Declared state-required loyalty oaths unconstitutional Limited community censorship of books and films Allowed more anti-war speech and symbolism Required reform of…. federal and state reapportionment the criminal justice system Expanded rights of accused (Miranda v. Arizona, 1966) Your rights As portrayed comically (we hope) As denied by FOX NEWS (FN criticized by Jon Stewart)
10
Reapportionment The way states redraw election districts (ie: the House of Representatives), based on the changing number of people in them. Baker v. Carr, 1962; Reynolds v. Sims, 1964: SCOTUS required states to make election districts equal in number to each other. Urban voters now had more elected representatives and power in the nation shifted from rural areas to cities.
