Morning Meeting in OWL: Purposes
Introduces Children to the day’s center activities
Guides children in making a first center choice
Provides teachers a management tool to support a variety of social skills
Sets the stage for meaningful learning experiences

Supports development of language & communication skills, vocabulary, grammar and complex sentence structures though adult modeling
Supports content knowledge acquisition & integration
Supports children’s social & emotional development

4. Features of Morning Meeting
10-15 mins.,whole group, teacher led/directed
Materials organized for easy access/use by the teacher and easily seen by children
Teacher explains/shows/ demonstrates each item from each center
Teacher uses rich vocabulary & complete sentences; presents info accurately & clearly
Teacher talk reinforces major concepts & connects to previous exps.-LFOAI, Sm. Grps. ,story events
Teacher responds briefly to child questions/comments

5. Features of Morning Meeting (continued)
After explaining/demonstrating an item from each center, Teacher calls Centers, ONE at a time, asking, “If you would like to start in the ____ center this morning, raise your hand.”
QUESTION: Why call centers and not individual children?
Teacher calls children who have raised hands for each center, to stand and move to chosen area w/2nd teacher. 2nd teacher returns to group once children reach their center to guide the next children to their center.
If a center has limits, & hands exceed it, T calls children to go, & puts other names on a turns list. Explains they will be able to choose somewhere else to start.
