Coming Up—B Day: Today 1/3: Space Environment, Introduce Final Project, The Martian Monday 1/7: Terrestrial Space Colonies & Equipment, Work time Wednesday 1/9: Orbital Space Colonies & Probes, work time Friday 1/11: Space Exploration Ethics, Worktime Monday 1/14 (skinny day): Work time Thursday 1/17: Final Exam period
4
What is a ‘Space Colony?”
Permanent or temporary settlement in outer space Can be Orbital or Planetary (on a surface) Orbital example: International Space Station Planetary example: Mars or Lunar colony
5
What kind of challenges need to be overcome in order to make a space colony/habitat work?
6
“Biosphere 2”: Oracle, Arizona Mars Arctic Research Station
another option… Planetary Colonies Artificial Gravity might not be needed for these This is a more permanent type of colony Building a society: Growing food Recycling materials Build an ecosystem…Terraforming? “Biosphere 2”: Oracle, Arizona Mars Arctic Research Station
7
Protection from Radiation & Atmosphere (…or lack there of…)
Similar to the challenges of an Orbital Colony Pressurized chambers Glass/surfaces that filter UV radiation Recycling of CO2 & O2…no deliveries from Earth on this one!
8
Communication with Earth
Satellites—NASA Deep Space Network there is lag time in communication Mars One is planning to have internet…so texting & sending info through Apps would be possible
9
Transportation (we’ll revisit this after break)
Time line to get there Launch date & trajectory (needs to be based on timeline) Time frame to send each piece of the colony up This is likely not able to be accomplished in a year…the ISS took 2 years just to be ready for a small crew…and it only takes hours/days to get onto the ISS
10
Growing Plants Hydroponics—growing plants without soil
Aquaponics—plants and fish create a sustainable environment
11
Can’t we just grow plants in the ground? Maybe…on Mars!
12
Societal Norms/Structure
Initially… Roles of people on the colony Chain of command Later on… Government Law & Order Currency? …so many more things!
