Aztec/Maya/Inca. The Maya were a well organized polytheistic society that disappeared before the arrival of the Spanish. The Aztecs were a well organized, polytheistic society. The Incas were also a well organized, polytheistic society. Both the Aztecs and Incas were conquered by the Spanish. Cortez conquered the Aztecs, Pizarro conquered the Incas.

Aztec Human Sacrifice They sacrificed humans because they believed the gods required human blood to be happy. They believed happy gods would bless them with good harvests and protection from their enemies.

Incas They were in the mountains of Peru, in present day South America. They were best known for making terraces to farm in the mountains. They had an elaborate system of roads that helped the villages stay connected. They are also best known for Machu Picchu

Columbian Exchange Terrible for the natives, mostly because of disease. Disease made it easier for the Spanish to conquer the natives. They also had better weapons than the natives. Potatoes, corn, beans are native to the “New World,” Onions, Turnips and Olives are native to the “Old World.”

Slave Trade The slaves were captured in Africa, by other Africans, and sold to the Europeans as part of the slave trade. Conditions in the “Middle Passage” were horrendous and many died on the way to the New World. Europeans needed slaves to work in their colonies because the natives had died out, mostly. Slaves were needed to farm sugar and tobacco.

Differences between “Old” and “New World.”
Old World is Europe. New World is the Americas. Both cultures had farming. Only the Europeans had domesticated animals (cows, pigs, goats, etc). This is why Europeans were immune to their diseases, but the Natives were not.
