2 LP8-1 What is a fact? A fact is something that can be proven true (or false). A fact can be verified by observation, research, witnesses or documents. A fact is objective, states reality or truth, and does not use biased words. Example: A snake is a reptile with no legs.

3 LP8-1 What is an opinion? An opinion is something believed to be true but might not always be true. An opinion is someone’s judgment, feeling, belief, or attitude about something. An opinion is subjective, interprets reality, and often uses biased words. Example: Vegetarian meals are the most healthy meals to eat.

LP8-1 Identifying Biased Words Here are words to look for when determining whether something is a fact or opinion: Never Should (not) Always Probably Best Good Worst Bad Most Believe Least Think Must (not) Favorite Also, adjectives that show a judgment or feeling like awesome, disgusting, exciting or terrible for example.

6 LP8-1 OPINION The U. S. Constitution is an amazing document. In this sentence the word “amazing” is a biased word. Amazing to whom? Some people might think the Constitution is amazing, and others may not. The author has made a personal judgment about the document that cannot be proven true.

10 LP8-1 FACT AND OPINION George Washington was one of the greatest military leaders in world history. George Washington was a military leader. That is a fact that can be proven by documents, research, and witness accounts. However, that General Washington was “one of the greatest” is a judgment by the author and therefore, an opinion. When both fact and opinion are present in a sentence, then the entire sentence becomes an opinion even though it contains some truth or facts.
