“Come to Me …” - to Him who is: “Gentle” - “mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit” (Thayer) “Humble in heart” - 2 Corinthians 10:1; Philippians 2:3-8 Lit. “Come here” or “come hither” some unwilling John 5:40

Who is invited? “… all who are …” “weary” - tired, exhausted, or fatigued. “Beaten out” (Vine) (Jeremiah 31:25; Psalms 107:9; John 7:37) “heavy-laden” - overburdened with spiritual anxiety, loaded down with sin. Luke 11:46 Lit. “Come here” or “come hither”

The Lord’s requirement: “Take My yoke upon you …” “Serving to couple two things together” (Vine) A symbol of servitude - one who has yielded (forcibly or willingly) control to another. Leviticus 26:13; Deuteronomy 28:48; 1 Kings 12:13-14; Acts 15:10; Galatians 5:1; Matthew 23:4; 1 Timothy 6:1 Lit. “Come here” or “come hither”

The Lord’s requirement: “… and learn from Me …” Includes knowledge but also “to learn by use and practice… to be in the habit of, accustomed to” (Thayer) (1 Timothy 5:4) Learn from what He did! John 13:15; Ephesians 4:20 Learn from what He taught! John 6:44-45; Ephesians 5:10 Learn from those whom He commissioned! John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13; Luke 10:16 Not WWJD, but WDJD and WDJT Lit. “Come here” or “come hither”

The Lord’s offer: “I will give you rest … you will find rest for your souls” “Recover and collect his strength to give rest, refresh” (Thayer) (Where do we seek our rest? Luke 12:19) Rest from what? (compare Matthew 5:10-12; 10:34; with John 16:33; Revelation 6:11; 14:13) We must exercise diligence to obtain rest. Hebrews 4:11 Weight of sin and guilt. A debt we cannot pay. Matthew 18:24 Slavery of the law and man-made traditions. Matthew 23:4; Luke 11:46 Worries and troubles of this life. Luke 21:34 Ultimately, from all things temporal. 2 Corinthians 5:4 Lit. “Come here” or “come hither”
