1 Commonly Confused Words
--define and practice What are they? Words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings.

2 Advice– The counselors gave me advice on my schedule. (noun)
Advise—The counselors advised me on what classes to take. (verb) All together—We will go all together as a class. (everyone at the same time) Altogether– You missed the joke altogether. (completely, entirely) Affect—Your performance will be affected by how much you practice. (verb, to act on) Effect—You will see positive effects if you keep practicing. (outcome, result)

3 Accept—Will you accept my apology? (to receive, verb)
Except—Everyone is going except for me. (excluding) All ready—I was all ready for the trip. Already—I have already told you my plans. (previously) Capital—Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. (center of government) Capitol– In Montgomery, the capitol is located downtown. (building)

4 Complement—Your earrings complement your outfit
Complement—Your earrings complement your outfit. (to complete; make better) Compliment—I received a compliment on my outfit today. (praise) Can—I can run 5 miles. (ability) May—You may borrow the car this weekend. (permission) Farther--Our house is a little farther down the road. (distance) Further—She wants further pursue her education. (time; greater amount)

5 Fewer—There are fewer girls than boys in this class. (countable things)
Less—There are less people on that side of the football stadium. (non-countable) Formally—I was formally invited to the party. (officially) Formerly—She was formerly a teacher at the school. (before; in the past) Good—He is a good athlete. (describes a noun) Well—Business is going well for the company. (health; manner)

6 Its—The dog wagged its tail. (possessive)
It’s—I think it’s going to rain today. (it is) Sit—Please sit down; you look tired. (to be in a seated position) Set—Please set your books down at the door. (to place or put) They’re—They’re going to the game with us. (they are) Their—Their band performed well tonight. (possessive) There—I have been there before. (direction or place)

7 Loose—The little girl’s front tooth is loose. (barely attached)
Lose—Hopefully we will not lose the game. (to suffer a loss) To—I am ready to go on the trip. Too—I hope I can make it, too. (in addition) Two—There are two things I need to tell you.

8 Past—Do not focus on your past mistakes. (history)
Passed—I passed you on the road yesterday. (verb) Than—Everyone is taller than me. (comparison) Then—First turn left, then take a right. Your—Please remember to bring your homework. (possessive) You’re—You are responsible for your actions. (you are)
