3 Read: FDR’s “First Inaugural Address” (CCL 285) and take notes on the following:
Identify FDR’s main claims and the evidence provided to support those claims. Annotate the text for the speaker’s use of parallel structure and sentence variety. Evaluate their impact on the speaker’s tone and purpose.

4 Listen to FDR’s “Pearl Habor Address” (links on class site) and take notes on the following:

5 On a sheet of blank paper, make a T-chart and:
Compare and contrast “First Inaugural Address” and “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” by answering and providing text evidence to address each of the following questions: How are FDR’s rhetorical choices similar? How do FDR’s rhetorical choices differ? How do FDR’s rhetorical choices reveal his purpose? To what extent is FDR’s reasoning valid in each speech? To what degree does FDR provide sufficient evidence in each speech?

6 Exit Ticket (answer on the back of your notes from the “Pearl Harbor Address”:
Respond to the following questions as a Quick Write: Who is FDR’s target audience in each of the speeches? Based on these speeches, what does FDR presume that his audience knows? Based on these speeches, what does FDR want his audience to understand?
