Student Data Sheet Name two or three pieces of published fiction you’ve read that actually mean something to you. Explain what about each story gets to you so much, if you can. From previous English classes, what was the best thing about the class? What were some not-so-good things about it? Explain what you’d like to get out of this semester—like, what your consumer-expectations are. (It would help to be specific…and to be honest rather than just saying whatever it is you think the instructor wants to hear.) How concerned are you about grades in this course? What do you expect your final grade to be based on? If you were the instructor for Honors English 9, what criteria would you use for grading?

Argument
7
Pop Quiz On any given day, American teenagers average how many hours of entertainment media: TV, movies, and online videos; playing video, computer, and mobile games; using social media; using the Internet; reading; and listening to music? According to Common Sense Media, it is 9 hours!
8
The media clearly plays a big role in our lives, and on some level, influences us.
Think about it… Movies tell us stories about who we are Advertisements tell us who we ought to be.
9
One of the ideas that the media communicates is what it means to be masculine or feminine.
What is “normal” and what is not.
10
Anticipatory Set How do portrayals in the media affect how we see ourselves? Does it mold our identity and define the roles we choose? Or are these images more a reflection of the values and the norms of our society? Do these images change with the times? And if they fail to change, what responsibility do we have to bring about change?
12
EQ: How does the media shape our ideas of gender roles?
Objective & Purpose Read exemplar argument, “What’s Wrong with Cinderella?” Use PAPA box to identify the author’s claim, and in Philosophical Chairs, argue for why you agree or disagree with the author. Pay attention to the arguments around you. What are the techniques that writers use to persuade? EQ: How does the media shape our ideas of gender roles?
13
Elements of Argument Rhetoric
Rhetorical Situation: Speaker, Audience, Context Claim and Counterargument Evidence Rhetorical Appeals: Ethos, Logos, Pathos, Kairos Style: diction, syntax, imagery, figurative language Persona
14
Kairos Kairos (Greek for “right time,” “season” or “opportunity”)
Refers to the “timeliness” of an argument. Often, for an ad or an argument to be successful, it needs appropriate tone and structure and come at the right time. For example, an ad featuring Avril Lavigne would be more effective for a teen magazine in 2002 than in A Sears ad featuring Kim Kardashian would be more appropriate in TeenVogue than it would be in AARP magazine. Kairos is also the reason you might send a different kind of complaint to your boss than you would to your mom or to a close friend. You may want similar results from all three of these recipients, but depending on who will read it, you may adjust the timing, tone and level of formality within the itself.
17
“What’s Wrong with Cindarella
“What’s Wrong with Cindarella?” (2006) by Peggy Orenstein Understanding and Interpreting While she does not explicitly state it, what exactly is the claim that Orenstein develops in this argument? Philosophical Chairs: do you agree with Orenstein’s point, are you in the middle, or do you disagree? Why so? What evidence makes you feel this way? What should you acknowledge or anticipate in terms of other perspectives? What’s your response?
18
EQ: How does the media shape our ideas of gender roles?
Objective & Purpose Discuss the article “What’s Wrong with Cinderella?” with your peers in Discussion Stations. Pay attention to the arguments around you. What are the techniques that writers use to persuade? EQ: How does the media shape our ideas of gender roles?
19
Closure What makes Peggy Orenstein’s “What’s Wrong with Cindarella?” a good argument? Be specific about the moves she makes as a writer to make this piece a good example of argumentative writing. What does she do that would be something you would want to implement into your argumentative writing repertoire?
20
Argument #3 5-7 pages with evidence from multiple sources (3 minimum). Graded using CCSS Argumentative Rubric 9-10. LOTF and R & J Argument The Media and its influence on gender roles OR…WHAT DO YOU WANT TO WRITE AN ARGUMENT ABOUT?

30
BW 9 January 2019 Describe or think of a symbol for stereotypical masculinity.
31
“Purple Rain” (1984) Based on the music video, how would you describe Prince, and how does Prince differ from stereotypical masculinity?
32
“When I Saw Prince, I Saw a Vital New Black Masculinity” (2016) by Terryn Hall
In what ways did Prince differ from the men Terryn Hall’s mother and her friends admired? Why was he “still worthy of their desire?” Why was Hall, even as an adolescent, drawn to Prince? Hall explain that she understood masculinity, especially black masculinity, from her grandfather and 1990s rappers. What qualities defined masculinity for these sources? What does she mean when she says that the idea of manhood to that generation “was just as rigid as my grandfather’s”? What is the “counter-narrative” that Prince offered to Hall? Specifically, what qualities in his music did she find attractive?
33
“When I Saw Prince, I Saw a Vital New Black Masculinity” (2016) by Terryn Hall
Her description of Prince is actually quite general: “beautiful and complex and flexible.” What do you think she means by these terms? How do these traits contrast with those that defined masculinity for the earlier rappers and her grandfather? Comparison. Orenstein and Hall write about gender representation and stereotypes in very different contexts. Yet, in what ways do these two writers hold similar views or concerns? Making Connections. When you saw _______________, you saw ________________. Explain.
35
Why should I buy these? What can you say or do to convince me to buy these?
36
Objective & Purpose Create two print advertisement with tagline for the Apple Airpods that are retailing for $159. Demonstrate understanding of PAPA box by using it to create your print advertisement. Determine your audience and brainstorm how you can sell the airpods to them. What would make them buy it? How can you convince them? Each group member completes PAPA box for advertisement in their notebook. All group members write the same thing. As a group, construct your print advertisement with tagline. One advertisement for the whole group. Put all your names on the back when you are done. Be prepared to present your ad, explaining to the class how it uses ethos, kairos, logos, and pathos to achieve purpose, appeal to a targeted group, and create an argument for why that targeted group should purchase the Apple Airpods.
