Complex Distributed Process Management Using Process Libraries and Electronic Handbooks (Where Shakespeare Meets Freud) Dr. Barry E. Jacobs NASA/GSFC

Organizations provide different views of the subprocesses.

Solution: Process Libraries maintain organization's views of the subprocesses.

Our basic approach is to wrap organization's subprocesses in a common envelope to facilitate learning, plus intra- and inter- organization communication.

Documents in Process Libraries have three levels of access. Unconditionally Distributable Documents. Here the document's hyperlink will point directly to the organizations document. (Example)Example Documents (On-line/Off-line) Maintained In Organization Libraries. Here the document's hyperlink will point into the organizations library maintaining the document. (Example: On-line) (Example: Off-line)Example: On-lineExample: Off-line Proprietary Documents. Here the document's hyperlink will point to the organizations person/persons responsible for the document from whom permission must be obtained. (Example)Example

Benefits: Process Libraries facilitate complex process management in several ways. Provides subprocesses and their subtasks. Provides subprocess documents and samples of these documents. Provides user instructions (Guidelines/Electronic Handbooks) to facilitate team development of subprocess documents. Allows organizations to tailor the above to their specific needs. Provides communication vehicles between people in the same and different organizations.

Process Libraries Operations Concept Organization Subprocess Formulation. Here we support the introduction of new organizations and their subprocesses into the library. Organization Subprocess Implementation. Here we support implementation of common tools for organizations in the library. Organization Subprocess Customer Support. Here we support user requests for the library. Organization Subprocess Evaluation. Here we support organization subprocess evaluations. Organization Subprocess Update. Here we support the updating of organizations and their subprocesses in the library. Organization Subprocess Closeout. Here we support the closeouts of organizations and their subprocesses from the library.

Process Libraries (PLs) and Electronic Handbooks (EHBs) are where Shakespeare meets Freud. In Process Libraries (PLs), subprocesses are represented as "plays" where "actors" communicate thru the Internet. Each organization puts on its own productions. For each role, Electronic Handbooks (EHBs) guide actors thru their parts. [Shakespearean] Organizations are represented as "teams" having "multiple personalities". Subprocess "plays" provide communication vehicles between members of the same team, different teams, and teams from different processes. [Freudian]

Subprocesses and EHBs are built and revised using the Play Development Paradigm Over Multiple Productions.
