1 Syntax Linguistics. a.the study of the rules for the formation of grammatical sentences in a language. b.the study of the patterns of formation of sentences and phrases from words. c.the rules or patterns so studied: English syntax.

2 Whats a simple sentence? A simple sentence is made up of one independent clause It consists of at least one subject and one predicate.

3 Simple After lunch, I will read my book. Before football practice, Thomas ate lobster and ice cream.

4 What is a compound sentence? A compound sentence is composed of at least two independent clauses. The clauses are joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction, a comma and a correlative conjunction, or a semicolon with no conjunction.

6 Ms. Donaldson enjoys reading, and her favorite author is Jodi Picoult. Ottawa is the capital of Canada, but Toronto is the capital of Ontario. Compound Identify the independent clauses and coordinating conjunction.

7 Compound (semi-colon) I am going home; I intend to stay there. It rained heavily during the afternoon; we managed to have our picnic anyway.

8 What is a complex sentence? A complex sentence consists of one independent clause, and one or more dependent clauses. The dependant clause begins with a subordinate conjunction. The dependent clause may be the first or second clause in the sentence. If the first clause in the sentence is dependent, a comma separates the two clauses.

9 Complex Sentences When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error. Identify the independent and dependant clause.

10 The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow. After they finished studying, Travis and Steven went to the movies. Travis and Steven went to the movies after they finished studying.

11 What is a compound-complex sentence? A compound-complex sentence is made up of at least one dependent clause and two or more independent clauses. The independent clause may be joined by another independent clause or dependent clause by using a coordinating conjunction or a semi-colon.

12 Compound/Complex Sentences John went to school, but James remained at home because he had a headache. If he changes his mind, we shall know for sure that Joe has learned his lesson, but only time will tell. Identify the conjunctions, independent and dependant clauses..

13 Those clouds promise rain; we should hurry before we get caught in a flood. Here is the money that I owe you, and I am happy to be free of the loan.
