Summary After Gatsby's death, there was a flood of reporters, photographers, and gossipmongers who wanted to find out what had happened on that night of the murder. Untrue and exaggerated stories were going around about his death. Nick was only person who thinks about him. He wants to hold a large funeral for Gatsby that he thinks he might do not want to go through his alone. He called Tom and Daisy’s home, but they already left the house without no address. Nick calls Gatsby’s friends and acquaintances to request to attend a funeral, but they either disappeared or refused to come.

Summary Gatsby’s father, Henry C. Gatz has come all the way from Minnesota after seeing Gatsby’s death in the Chicago Newspaper while Nick has not been knowing how to reach him. Henry C. Gatz is proud of his son, and he show Nick a book in which a young Gatsby had written a schedule for self-improvement. Although Nick has tries to find attendants, there are only Nick, Gatsby’s father, Owl Eyes, and a few servants at his funeral. Sick of the East and its empty values, Nick decides to go back to the Midwest. Just before he leaves, Nick encounters Tom on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Nick initially refuses to shake Tom’s hand but eventually accepts.

Summary Nick asks Tom what he said to Wilson that afternoon. Tome says that he told Wilson that Gatsby owned the car that killed Myrtle. He also says Gatsby deserves to die. Nick concluded that Tom and Daisy are careless people and that they think their wealth will justify everything and shields them from having to face any negative consequences. On his last night in West Egg before moving back to his hometown, Nick walks over Gatsby's mansion. He erases scrawled obscene words on the steps.
