Essay Topic: “We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” We all have roles and contribute to society in various ways. From our reading of “Quilt of a Country,” “Raymond’s Run,” “The Sniper,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Gettysburg Address,” “The Vietnam Wall,” and “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” identify and analyze what each author was trying to convey about the individual’s role in society.

Anecdote As Johnny walked down the empty street littered with debris and dust, he could only think about his family. The muffled sound of people screaming and sirens wailing only becomes less terrifying with time. After being over here for six months, he has become immune to these sounds. He wasn’t sure what his responsibility to his country would be when he signed up for the military at the tender age of eighteen, but he certainly didn’t think it would include exterminating people. The responsibility of a soldier is deeper than anyone outside the experience can ever imagine. THESIS STATEMENT

Quote Paul Collier said, “You are a citizen, and citizenship carries responsibilities.” These responsibilities can change depending on one’s set of circumstances. The responsibilities of a citizen of the United States of American can vary greatly from the responsibilities of a citizen in a different area of the world. THESIS STATEMENT

Extraordinary Fact Americans celebrate the birth of their nation as July 4, 1776, but the Army is actually the country's "big brother." That makes sense, considering the Continental Army of 1775, led by future President George Washington, needed to start winning the war against the British in the colonies so Thomas Jefferson could begin writing “The Declaration of Independence.” For centuries soldiers have been setting aside their personal feelings and acting on behalf of the country they serve. Your Turn! What techniques and methods will you use to bring your audience into your argument? You can choose one, or more than one! If you have checked your graphic organizer and Flash Draft with me, use the rest of class as independent work time to craft your introductory paragraph and thesis statement using the notes you have. You must finish your graphic organizer, then your flash draft, before you can start on your introduction and thesis statement. Please: Come to me with questions, not your classmates. Keep talking to a minimum. Use your time wisely!
