2 Early History Japan and Korea were influenced by China
Ex.: Chinese missionaries brought Buddhism to Japan & Korea

3 Emperors (Japan) The 1st governments in Japan had emperors (sound familiar?) The capital was Kyoto Emperors were often more concerned with art than running the country – power slipped away

4 The Japanese Feudal System- 1200 – 1800 AD
Emperor Shogun – “Great General” Daimyo – Land owners Samurai- warriors Peasants – 90%

5 Shoguns (Japan) Power fell to the shoguns
Shogun- Japanese military leader Each shogun ruled in emperors name

6 Samurai (Japan) Samurai- highly trained Japanese warriors
Samurai = “Those who serve” Were very respected in society Followed an honor code – Bushido – “Way of the Warrior”

7 Qualities of a Samurai Justice Courage Mercy Politeness Honesty Honor
Loyalty Self-Control

8 Samurai - Japan Training begins in childhood
Combination of poetry, physical training, & Buddhism Wore kimonos Hair in a topknot “Obi” or belt that held the samurai’s sword was worn on the left side

9 Samurai - Japan Seppuku – Japanese ritual of suicide performed by samurai Used voluntarily by the samurai to prevent capture Used to punish a samurai for serious offenses Believed to restore honor

~1600 AD, Tokugawa rulers begin ruling – distrust foreigners Tokugawas ended almost all foreign trade Kicked out foreigners No Japanese allowed outside Japan (Sound familiar?)

15 Atomic Bombs Dropped August 6 & 9, 1945 Hiroshima & Nagasaki
185,000 immediate deaths Japan surrenders Aug. 15
