1 Take out the homework from yesterday:
2/6/19 Take out the homework from yesterday: Describe the functions of blood I will be stamping them This is page 41 The Chapter 17 targets are page 39

2 Blood 17

3 Functions of Blood Substance distribution (transportation) It moves: hormones, oxygen, nutrients & wastes Regulation Maintains: Temperature, pH and blood volume Body protection prevent blood loss Fights infections

4 Blood is the body’s only fluid tissue
Composition of Blood Blood is the body’s only fluid tissue It is composed of liquid plasma and formed elements Formed elements include (cells): Erythrocytes, or red blood cells (RBCs) Leukocytes, or white blood cells (WBCs) Platelets Hematocrit – the percentage of RBCs out of the total blood volume

5 Blood Plasma Plasma is mostly water (90%)
Blood plasma contains over 100 solutes, including: Proteins – Nonprotein nitrogenous substances – (products of metabolism) Organic nutrients Electrolytes Respiratory gases

6 Take out your page(s) 40 for me to check for questions
2/6 Take out your page(s) 40 for me to check for questions Complete the CFA

7 Plasma and formed elements
CFA answers Plasma and formed elements Liquid, mostly water, things dissolved in it Platelets, red blood cells (erythrocytes), White blood cell (leukocytes) 1: Distribution/transport/moves things 2: protection 3. regulation/maintains things

8 Set up a new page of notes: page 43
EQ: What are the formed elements and what are their functions?

9 Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells: RBC)
Filled with hemoglobin (Hb), a protein that functions in gas transport Transport gases (O2 and CO2) do not consume the oxygen they transport have no nucleus, essentially no organelles notes

10 Leukocytes (White Blood Cells: WBC)
only blood components that are complete cells: Are less numerous than RBCs Can leave capillaries and move through tissue spaces Fight infections from bacterial or viral invasion Make up 1% of the total blood volume Grouped into granulocytes and agranulocytes notes

11 Platelets notes Fragments of cells Platelets function in the clotting mechanism by forming a temporary plug Platelets not involved in clotting are kept inactive by other molecules

12 I’ve cut myself! New EQ and new page: Page 45 EQ: How am I not bleeding to death?

13 A series of reactions designed to stop bleeding
Hemostasis A series of reactions designed to stop bleeding During hemostasis, three phases occur in rapid sequence Vascular spasms Platelet plug formation Coagulation (blood clotting) notes

14 With a partner: Stages of hemostasis
Use a book to place the stages/steps found in the envelope of hemostasis is correct order

15 Vascular Spasms (step one)
immediate vasoconstriction in response to injury Narrowing of the vessels Reduces blood loss

16 Platelet Plug Formation (step Two)
Upon damage to blood vessel lining platelets: adhere to collagen Stick to exposed collagen fibers and form a platelet plug Release chemicals which attract still more platelets

17 Coagulation (step three)
A set of reactions that transforms blood from a liquid to a gel Series of reactions that cause one chemical to create another in a domino effect The final three steps of this series of reactions are: Prothrombin activator is formed Prothrombin is converted into thrombin Thrombin causes fibrinogen to convert into a fibrin mesh
