1 Nature Always Finds a Way
AKA Biological Complexity of Cancer Distrupters Medha Deoras-Sutliff, Jill Feldman,Denis Raymond,Holly Rose,Nicole Stromer Advocate Mentor: Sandy Finestone Scientific Mentor: Keith Chan AKA Group 1, AKA The Best Team MEDHA Good evening. We are The Disrupters. Our presentation today has been inspired by the Biological Complexity of Cancer and the mathematical and physical modeling thereof. AKA ….. For Steven Spielberg fans… NATURE ALWAYS FINDS A WAY. Thank you to our amazing mentors, Sunny Sandy and Canada Keith!

2 Before... EPITHELIAL 25 years ago, cancer was considered ONE disease. The treatment was the same for each patient based on organ site and only studied at the epithelial level

3 Multi-step Tumor Progression .... and Metastasis
Jill And how the primary cancer evolves and proliferates by breaking thru the basement membrane traveling thru blood or lymph system and eventually progressing to metastatic disease.

4 Evolution! Even after treatment we have a better understanding of the complexity of the cancer. And understand that the cancer in each patient continues to adapt, evolve and evade We now know cancer is a lot more complex than we thought and evolves in a unique way, from patient to patient to patient, and we continue to learn as time goes on.

5 ADIPOSE IMMUNE STROMAL
Now... PRIMARY TUMORS ADIPOSE IMMUNE STROMAL HOLLY Each type of cancer is even more complex than the epithelial cell. Each has its own intrinsic characteristics of age, ethnicity, family history and more. As it branches off you are treating a different soil or microenvironment of the adipose, the immune and stromal cells etc. Once a cancer metastasizes the complexities magnify further, you are now treating different soils, and each metastatic growth is different like the oranges, apples, lemons etc. Each with it’s own distinct characteristics and density of mutations. This is why we treat cancer heterogeneously.

6 METASTASIS ADIPOSE IMMUNE STROMAL

7 ADIPOSE IMMUNE STROMAL
Nicole This slide illustrates the external factors that may impact the evolution of the cancer cells and the development of mutations…. These factors can include diet, exercise, sleep, stress all of which can affect the immune system

8 MATHEMATICS PHYSICS EVOLUTION DENIS
This brings us to the ways in which we use mathematical and physical models as building blocks to better understand the evolution of cancer. The fields of math and physics have allowed us to develop and access tools that help us inform the cancer processes.

9 CTCs and Metastasis and Metabolism and microenvironment and environment and cells and complexity and adaptation and evolution and controlling and cells and controling behaviour and tumour and MAY MAY MAY be able to affect HARNESS DR BARKER gogogogo there’s a nuance in CTCs and DnArfc can I You think you've got it Oh, you think you've got it But got it just don't get it when there's nothin' at all We get together Oh, we get together But separate's always better when there's feelings involved Know what they say -its Nothing lasts forever! Then what makes it, then what makes it

11 Bone status and Mobility
MODELING! DENIS Mathematical models of the physical world has allowed the analysis of movement in order to evaluate ECOG/Bone status and Mobility in oncology patients, like in the case of the use of mokap suits! (very cool). Bone status and Mobility Patient: Sandra Finestone

12 Pizza box FOR MODELING ! (cowabunga!)
MEDHA Imagine my surprise when I learned mathematical models are employed easily to provide real world evidence and to understand the complexity of cancer and its effect on patient’s outcome. And it’s the opposite of complex...All it takes is a pizza box (cowabunga!) with tools to gather data - BUT the key point in this model is the data gathering happens when NOT in front of your doctor. The question here? Is it the drugs or patient’s overall health? Understanding and treating fraility can directly impact patient accrual

13 The Patient Comes First
Because... The Patient Comes First Nicole You treat a disease: You win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you win, no matter the outcome. -Patch Adams (Robin Williams)
