The Soviets Explode A – Bomb (1949)
Soviet Union explodes its first atomic bomb. American’s react with fear and horror. Took America’s weaponry advantage away. America rushes to develop a more powerful weapon – H-bomb.

Iran Nationalizes its Oil Industry (1951)
Iranian Prime Minister places oil industry under government control. America uses CIA in a covert action to topple Iranian government. America helps establish a government more favorable to Western interest. Puts pro-American Shah of Iran back into power.

Guatemalan Government gives American – owned land away. (1954)
Guatemalan government gives this land to peasants. Because Eisenhower believed Guatemalan government had Communists sympathies, U.S. uses CIA action to topple the government. Guatemalan army’s leader becomes dictator.

Warsaw Pact (1955) Soviet Union finally recognizes West Germany, and makes peace with Austria and Japan. West Germany is allowed to re-arm itself and join NATO. Soviets form the Warsaw Pact with 7 Eastern European nations; Albania, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.

Summit in Geneva (1955) Eisenhower travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to meet with Soviet leaders. Eisenhower proposed an “open skies” policy. This would allow for flights over each others territory to guard against a nuclear surprise attack. Soviets rejected this proposal.

Egypt Invaded (1956) Britain, France, and Israel invade and occupy the Suez Canal. America reacts with shock because the situation did not seem to call for this type of action. America asked the U.N. to order a cease fire and a withdrawal of all troops.

Soviets Invade Hungary (1956)
Soviet Union uses tanks to invade Hungary to put down a rebellion. America protested the invasion , but did very little to help.

Soviets Launch First Space Satellite (1957)
Americans were utterly shocked. Made many Americans feel vulnerable and inferior to Soviet science and technology. U.S. immediately began working to improve science education programs. U.S moved swiftly to develop satellites and better weapons – delivery systems.

Space Race Begins (1958) Soviet Sputnik launched on October 4, 1957.
Travelled around the Earth at 18,000 mph. Circled the globe every 96 minutes. January 31, 1958, America launches it first satellite.

U – 2 Spy Plane Shot Down (1960)
American U – 2 plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers shot down over Soviet air space. At first, America lied about the incident. Said that the planes activities were not for the purposes of spying on the Soviets. America publically admitted their guilt to save an upcoming summit on the arms race.
