The Cherokees History Lived primarily in North Georgia before Europeans arrived Much like the Creek were heavily connected to the British When the American Revolution happened the Cherokee people had to make a choice

The Cherokee plan The Cherokee people decided to make treaties with Americans They made a treaty where they allowed for Americans to build a road through their land (Federal Road) Ultimately they decided to make their society try and look like Americans for equality

Sequoyah ( ) Sequoyah was born George Gist and nicknamed little lame one in Cherokee He was half white and half Cherokee but rejected his white side, never learned English He is well known for creating the Cherokee Syllabary (Written language)

Effects of Sequoyah This was the first time a written language was created from an illiterate society Eventually used to make a constitution and publish the first Cherokee language newspaper the Cherokee Phoenix Eventually died in 1840 after being forcibly removed to the West

John Ross (1790-1846) Ross was the head chief of the Cherokee nation
Also of Mixed heritage and like the Creek chiefs practiced many European customs Ross was a successful business man and hoped to be a new “civilized” Cherokee He hoped that his evolution would protect him from the Indian Removal Act of 1830 but it didn’t
