Critical Essay Writing

Introduction Write the name of the text you have studied. Remember to use quotation marks. Write the author’s name. State the genre. Give a very brief summary of the plot. Refer to your essay question.

Development Each main paragraph will start with a topic sentence which will refer directly to your essay question. Back up your topic sentence with ideas relating to context keeping question in mind. Quote: ensure quotation has relevance to essay question. Analyse: pick out words, expressions, techniques from your quotation which will back up ideas for your essay question. Summarise: show how your paragraph has made a point about your essay question.

Refer to essay question. Give a personal reaction relating to essay question.

7. Choose a novel or a short story or work of non-fiction which explores an important theme.
By referring to appropriate techniques, show how the author has explored this theme.

Paragraph 1 Before we can talk about Mary being unfairly treated we must explain Mary’s predicament Topic sentence: At the start of the story, Mary explains how dyslexia affects her. When she tries to read or write the letters, “QUOTE” Explanation Link to the task – This shows that Mary has a genuine learning difficulty. It is this undiagnosed dyslexia that causes others to treat her unfairly.
