2 Goals Students will know how to use the Course Planning Guide.
Students will know the difference between high school and college requirements. Students will know where to find help for making next year’s course requests. Students will know the timeline and method for making course requests. Students will make their final request for courses to build their class schedule Write your name on your course planning guide and the insert. 6 4 year course planning Page 5 of the Course Planning Guide provides a chart designed to assist students with their four year course planning. Patrice to present this page

7 Student Placement Middle School teachers will use the results of the High School Readiness assessment, 8th grade course performance and teacher recommendations to identify honors placement for a student in: English Math/Science Social Studies (World History is not a freshman class requirement) Foreign Language (foreign language is NOT a graduation requirement) Case managers will use an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to identify which class students will be placed in for Special Education. If the second number if a 9 on the pink course selection, it is a class that is offered in the special education department. Cheryl to present this page

8 World History Honors Social Studies is not a freshman graduation requirement. World History Honors, Ancient Civilizations, and Western Civilizations are freshman elective courses. Students recommended for World History Honors must demonstrate the ability to read, discuss and write critically. World History Honors: preparatory course for AP US History, which students can take sophomore year. The focus of course is on reading (textbook, historical documents, primary/secondary sources), analysis/annotation skills, and writing skills in which students develop a thesis using historical information to support the argument The placement letter will read “Your student was recommended for WHH or Ancient Civilizations/Western Civilizations”. 9 Spanish I Vocabulary, study skills, and a strong command of English grammar are necessary The students need to be able to grasp/understand vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure in English Grade of B or better in 8th grade English If the student cannot grasp English concepts, it is difficult to understand Spanish concepts (the class will require a connection to be made between English and Spanish) Foreign Language is not a graduation requirement Spanish I – & 80122 Cheryl will explain this slide

10 Introductory Spanish If you do not qualify for Spanish I, a freshman may elect to take Introductory Spanish. Introductory Spanish would be a modified Spanish 1 class with a slower pace to ensure learning for all levels of students. Introductory Spanish will be one credit per semester. Student may take the class for 2 semesters. Introductory Spanish would cover basic grammar and introductory vocabulary. Students who choose this track could take 1 year of Introductory Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and could take Spanish 3 as their last year. Introductory Spanish and 80012

11 Recommendation Letters
Geneseo High School mailed a letter indicating all recommended classes in February. If a parent has concerns about the course recommendation(s), please contact your high school counselor before April 2. English, Math, Science, Health and PE/Driver Education courses will be entered in Skyward** Cheryl will explain this slide

12 Selecting Electives Course terms which are “S12” meet either semester
Course terms which are “S1” meet first semester Course terms which are “S2” meet second semester Make sure you select both semesters of a year long course. Year long courses are indicated in bold on page 2 of the Course Planning Guide. (i.e. foreign language, band, choir, Family and Consumer Science, Intro to Ag). Do not select a course with 9 as the second number without teacher permission. Linda V

14 Study Hall recommended for all freshmen
You may take one or two semesters of study hall. First semester study hall (90121). Second semester study hall (90122). Students may seek additional academic assistance from teachers during study hall. There is no guarantee your study hall will be scheduled during 7th period. Linda V

17 Directions for requesting courses in Skyward Skyward opens 2/16/18 at 3:30 pm
To begin the process, you will log onto the Family Access page today using either the parent or student access (found on high school tab). 1. Choose “Schedule” (left side tool bar) 2. Click “Request courses for high school” (upper right) 3. Find the elective classes (Study Hall) you want to pick 4. Highlight each request (follow pink worksheet course selection list) 5. Click “add course” 6. After 6 #’s have been added, choose the print icon in upper right corner 7. Check list of choices you have made. 8. If correct, select the print icon on the top right side of the page and print. This page must be signed by a parent and student. 9. Logout 10. Please write down 2 (two) alternatives Return the course request page to the HS Guidance office by February 26th with a parent signature. Do not select a course with 9 as the second number without teacher permission. Patrice will explain

18 Signature Page Your skyward printout must have parent and student signatures. The print out of your requests and alternate courses must be turned in to the middle school counselors by February 26th . Please do not request “alternates” in online scheduling. Write at least 1 full year class and 1 semester class as “alternates” on the skyward printout page. Do not write down a class you are not prepared to enroll in.
