The Roaring 20’s During the 1920’s new products became available to the people Employment in manufacturing was steady PROBLEM: Overproduction of products by companies who continued to produce even as consumers were purchasing less This led to layoffs in companies which Led to less consumers to purchase goods PROBLEM: Buying on credit-spending

The Stock Market People invested in the stock market (Wall Street) because they saw a safe investment that always went up People started to take out loans to invest in the stock market Banks invested their deposits in the stock market From the Dow Jones went from PROBLEM: stocks can go down PROBLEM: speculation on credit

Lack of trade with Europe because of 1. economic depression in Europe and 2. high tariffs reduced trade

6 4. Dust Bowl across the Midwest
Terrible drought conditions across the Great Plains west of the Mississippi River Many farmers lost their farms and made their way to California Many sharecroppers were displaced by tractors

As the depression wore on, a presidential election took place in Herbert Hoover was the Republican incumbent against Democrat Franklin Roosevelt FDR won the election with 42 of the 48 states Put people to work in NEW Federal programs

9 Federal programs CCC: Civilian Conservation Corps—thousands of young men to work in the outdoors WPA/PWA: Works Progress Administration employed men to build roads, schools, bridges, public buildings AAA: Agricultural Adjustment Act--kill animals and destroy crops to create a market Social Security—government run retirement fund; disability and poor

11 CCC By 1941 when it was disbanded, the CCC had employed almost 3.5 million men. Some estimates are that they planted 2.5 billion trees, protected 40 million acres of farmland from erosion, drained 248,000 acres of swamp land, replanted almost a million acres of grazing land, built 125,000 miles of roads, fought fires, and created 800 state parks and 52,000 acres of campgrounds. 15 WOODLAND PARK A lagoon filled with swans, geese and ducks runs through the heart of...it is not wondrous but is a pleasant municipal park. Interestingly it was created from a "mosquito bog" as a 1937 WPA project. Thousands of native trees and shrubs were transplanted from surrounding areas.

17 AAA In exchange for holding down production of crops, farmers received financial payments called subsidies. These helped keep quantities limited so prices could stay high enough so Farmers could survive and not go broke Extra milk dumped, animals slaughtered and burned up, chickens killed and destroyed

19 POSITIVE Effects of the New Deal
Restored people’s faith and confidence in America Annual per capita income rose from $678 in 1932 to $925 in 1939 Electricity to many rural areas

GROWTH OF GOVERNMENT!!!!!! Large national debt: $2.6 billion, $6.5 billion Power of the government increased People look to the government for help in all areas of life—”entitlements” How does the government work today, and what do people want the government to do for them today?
