4 Metrics are not just for large companies
Info-Tech’s survey showed that small, medium and large companies are all benefitting from metrics Regardless of company size, metrics can play a critical role in capacity management and planning, and getting approval for budget increases. For example, a recent Info-Tech survey found that most IT leaders are using metrics to right-size purchases, optimize utilization, anticipate growth, and so on, across the infrastructure (i.e., servers, storage, facilities, data networks, and telephony). Similarly, IT leaders are using metrics to help them make the business case to get funding for technology changes/upgrades, capacity increases, and staffing increases. If it gets measured, it gets managed. Larger companies have more resources, which means they also have more resources to waste. Small companies can't afford to waste time or money, so they should be using metrics the most. ~ Derek Boutang, Pembina Trails School District ~

5 Working with metrics does not require excessive time investment to see the benefits
IT Leaders that are most successful at leveraging metrics spend, on average, 3 hours per week reviewing and analyzing The key to successfully using metrics is determining which ones matter to you and filtering out the rest. Spending too much time on metrics is likely an indicator that you are reviewing too many metrics, or not properly delegating collection and analysis work. Too little time may be an indicator that you are using metrics primarily for alerts or ad-hoc troubleshooting, and not making enough use of metrics for strategic planning and getting out of constant firefighter mode. 80 78% Leveraging Metrics – Success Score 75 70 65 60 55 50 45 <1 hour 1 hour 2 hours 3 hours 4 hours 5+ hours Automation of the collection and reporting of data will create efficiencies and reduce the efforts involved. However, be sure that you are allowing time to incorporate metrics analysis in capacity planning, and go beyond just looking for anomalies. Source: Info-Tech Research Group, N=90
