CCELA Text Analysis ANALYSIS of HOW the writing strategy helps communicate the message: This is HARD! It’s RHETORICAL ANALYSIS! The kind of stuff you do in AP Lang & Comp. It’s not intuitive for most people.

CCELA Text Analysis Ask yourself:
Why does the writer use this strategy? How does this particular device relay the central idea? What does this device/strategy add to the piece?

CCELA Text Analysis Your job, as analyst:
EXPLAIN the device or strategy. Is there a METAPHOR? What is it? What two things are being compared? How does it work to make the central message clearer?

EXPLAIN the device or strategy. Is there IMAGERY? Explain which sense the examples appeals to (we have five ). Explain what the reader feels or experiences. Connect the sensory experience to the central message in some way.

EXPLAIN the device or strategy. Is POINT OF VIEW significant? Explain whose POV the passage is coming from; identify type (first person limited). Explain what the speaker is experiencing after you offer a quote. Explain how this unique perspective impacts the central message.

EXPLAIN the device or strategy. Is ALLUSION present? Explain what the author is alluding to (making reference to) that is well known to the reader. Explain what the reader likely feels or thinks of because of this allusion. Explain how this “layer of meaning” helps drive home the central message.

CCELA Text Analysis Keep up the good work! A score of “3” is solid.
A score of “4” is tough, but not impossible. Aim high! You guys have done really well so far – by June you will be writing even better!
