4 Primary Sources Primary sources are materials produced by people or groups directly involved in the event or topic under consideration, either as participants or as witnesses. They provide the evidence on which historians rely in order to describe and interpret the past. Some primary sources are written documents, such as letters; diaries; newspaper and magazine articles; speeches; autobiographies; treatises; census data; and marriage, birth, and death certificates. In addition, historians often examine primary sources that are not written, like works of art, films, recordings, items of clothing, household objects, tools, and archaeological remains.

5 Example of Primary source cited in bibliography
U.S. Constitution- U.S. Constitution, art. 4, sec. 1. Online Government Publication- U.S. Department of State, Country Reports on Terrorism 2007, April 30, (accessed August 7, 2008).

6 Secondary sources Historians also use secondary sources: books and articles in scholarly journals that comment on and interpret primary sources. Reading secondary sources is often the simplest and quickest way to become acquainted with what is already known about the subject you are studying. Reading a variety of secondary sources is also the best way to become aware of the issues and interpretation that are the subject of controversy and you, as a student of history, are invited to participate.
