Suppose there is a cave, and inside the cave there are some men chained up to a wall, so that they can only see the back wall of the cave and nothing else. These men can't see anything outside of the cave, or even see each other clearly, but they can see shadows of items in the firelight. There is a puppeteer in front of the fire, which cast a shadow on the cave wall. One man exclaims, “Look other people are here with us!” The prisoners then begin to call these shadows people, even though they are not. Their reality is limited to what they can see on the walls, and they have accepted the fact that other people are with them, when in reality they are seeing shadows of objects that are not human.
