Notes: 1-Dimensional Horizontal Motion
Speed – the measure of how much time it takes an object to change position from one point to another point -rate of change in position -rate of motion Speedaverage = Ddistance delta means “change Dtime S = Dd units m cm km Dt s , min , hr
2
-rate of change in position with direction
Velocity– the measure of how much time it takes an object to change position from one point to another point, including its direction -rate of change in position with direction -rate of motion with direction velocity = D displacement (Direction) D time Vaverage = Dd E,W,N,S Dt units m East cm North km South s , min , hr
3
Average speed – the total distance traveled divided by the total time of travel
Instantaneous speed – speed at a given point in time Constant speed – speed with no change. Object does not slow down or speed up.
4
Acceleration rate of change in velocity, or direction how fast velocity is changing Acceleration = change in velocity over a change in time aaverage = Dv = Vf – Vi units: D t D t Vf = final velocity Vi = initial velocity
5
Vf = 60 km/hr Vi = 20 km/hr t = 1 hr What is the acceleration of the car? a = Dv = Vf – Vi D t D t =
