PREACHING IN GALILEE – RAISING A WIDOWS SON - JOHN’S INQUIRY - DINNER WITH A PHARISEE - LUKE 7; MATTHEW 11 APRIL 3, 2019

2 Gospel of Luke Unique characteristics:
Focus on the human condition of sin – frequent use of the word “sinners.” More frequent mentioning of women, children and the poor and oppressed. (14:7-14; 16:13-31; 18:18-22; 21:1-4) Focus on prayer and rejoicing. (6:12; 9:28; 18:1-8; 22:44) Stressed the role of the Holy Spirit (1:35; 41, 67; 2:25; 3:16; 4:1)

“Then He said to her, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’” What was the desired outcome of her faith? Did she “show (her) faith by (her) works”? (James 2:18) (Compare to the Centurion in vs and the 10 lepers in Luke 17:10) Perfect passive tense - “have been and thus stand forgiven”

“‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’” From now on, what did she need to do? (John 8:11; 5:14) “Peace” - “the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is: (Romans 8:6)” (Thayer)

Who is invited? “… all who are …” “weary” - tired, exhausted, or fatigued. “Beaten out” (Vine) (Jeremiah 31:25; Psalms 107:9; John 7:37) “heavy-laden” - overburdened with spiritual anxiety, loaded down with sin. Luke 11:46 Lit. “Come here” or “come hither”
