Author’s style is everything that an author does in his or her writing
You need to think about literature the way in which an author would
Review your notes on literary terms; all of these terms (plus some new ones) will become the “tool box” with which to discuss literature

9. When discussing literature
You answer a prompt . . .
A= Assertion about the literature which answers the prompt. It is NOT a fact in the story. It is your opinion which must be stated in third person. It may NOT contain a literary term
E= Evidence to support your assertion from the literature. This is direct quotes– words, phrases or sentences
A=Analysis about the evidence. How does this evidence support your assertion? How can you use literary terms? You must layer the literary terms

11. “A Tell Tale Heart” Prompt:
“Discuss Poe’s characterization of madness.”
Remember the rules~
No lit terms in the assertion~
No first or second person~

12. Example:
Madness can be a solitary existence as is shown in the short story. The narrator says, “I can tell you the whole story.” By using this first and second person point of view, it makes it seem like the narrator is talking directly to the reader. This leads to mood of loneliness or solitude. It seems as if the narrator is alone with no one else to talk to except the reader and himself. Furthermore, as the narrator carries out his plan of murder, “it took me an hour to place my whole head with the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed.” This very long complex sentence with several dependant clauses has a rambling effect making the narrator seem crazy and lonely as he stands in the bedroom. The image of him slowly pushing his head into the doorway also brings to mind the picture of man who has nothing else to do but stand in a dark room. This setting also gives a quiet, isolated feeling.
