1 Polar vs. Non Polar Bonds!

2 What is a non polar bond? Where electrons SHARED in a bond are shared EQUALLY. They share equally if they have the same electronegativity!

3

4 NON POLAR examples H2

5 NON POLAR examples N2

6 NON POLAR examples CH4 (Methane)

7 What is a polar bond? A polar bond is where the electrons SHARED between two atoms are shared UNEQUALLY. They are pulled a little closer to one atom than another.

8 Examples of polar bonds
Water HF (Hydrogen Fluoride)

9 Another example

11 Molecules can also be polar or non polar
This is more about symmetry than just the presence of polar bonds… Methane has non polar bonds and is a non polar molecule…because the hydrogens are pulling on the carbon equally in all directions The molecule is symmetrical

12 Molecules can also be polar
This is more about symmetry than just the presence of polar bonds… Water has polar bonds AND is a polar molecule

13

14 This is co2…what kind of bonds? What kind of molecule?
This is more about symmetry than just the presence of polar bonds… Carbon dioxide has polar bonds, but is a non polar molecule. The central carbon is being pulled equally by the oxygens

15

16 Hydrogen bonds Hydrogen bonds are weak associations between slightly positively charged hydrogen atoms and slightly negatively charged atoms. For example between water molecules

17 Once significant example of hydrogen bonding
DNA!!
