Le Passé Composé avec Avoir

Objective You will be able to form the passé composé of regular –er, -re, and –ir verbs that use avoir.

The Passé Composé The passé composé is the most common form of the French past tense. It is used to describe actions that began and were completed in the past The passé composé can be translated into English in 3 ways. French: Marc a joué au tennis. English: Marc played tennis. English: Marc has played tennis. English: Marc did play tennis.

Formation of the Passé Composé The passé composé is made using two parts: the helping verb (le verbe auxilliare)conjugated in the present tense, followed by a past participle. Passé composé = present tense of the helping verb + past participle

The Auxiliary Verb Avoir Most French verbs use avoir for their helping verb. The verb avoir is conjugated into the present tense to form the first part of the passé composé. aiavons asavez aont J ai mangé du gâteau. Nous avons regardé Netflix.

Past Participles of regular –er verbs For regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -er, the past participle is formed by replacing the final -er of the infinitive with -é. parler = parlé jouer = joué manger = mangé Tu as parlé à ton ami.

Past Participles of regular –ir verbs The past participle of regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -ir is formed by dropping the final -r from the infinitive. finir = fini choisir = choisi réussir (to succeed)= réussi Vous avez fini vos devoirs.

Past Participles of regular –re verbs The past participle of regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -re is formed by replacing the final -re of the infinitive with -u. perdre (to lose)= perdu attendre (to wait) = attendu vendre (to sell) = vendu Ils ont vendu la voiture.

Practice Verbes that end in –er: Tu chantes Tu as chanté Verbs that end in –ir: Il finit Il a fini Verbs that end in –re: Je réponds Jai répondu

Negation Make a sentence with the passé composé negative by putting ne pas around the conjugated auxiliary verb. Je n ai pas parlé à Paul. Elle n a pas choisi un sandwich. Ils n ont pas perdu leurs stylos.

Asking Questions with the Passé Composé Add a question mark. Tu as perdu tes clés? Use est-ce que for a yes or no question. Est-ce quil a dansé? To form a question in the passé composé using inversion, invert the conjugated helping verb with the subject and put a hyphen in between the helping verb and subject. As tu mangé? (Did you eat?) If the subject begins with a vowel you have to add an extra hypen and a letter t. A-t-il chanté?
