2 Movement of Materials Roots- Moves water and most nutrients into the plants Vascular Bundles- Takes water and minerals from the roots to the leaves Leaves- Moves gases in and out, water moves out

3 Leaves Stomata-openings in the epidermis that allow for gases to move in and out 90% of the water that enters through the roots, exits through the leaves Guard Cells-control the size of the stomata

4 Leaves Epidermis- the outer layer of the leaf
Transparent Palisade-food (energy) making layer

5 Leaves Chloroplasts-green part of the leaf that contains chlorophyll
This is where photosynthesis takes place Chlorophyll-the green pigment in chloroplasts

6 FOOD! Photosynthesis-the process by which plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make sugar and oxygen

7 Photosynthesis The formula for photosynthesis:
6CO2+6H2O+light energy --chlorophyll-- C6H12O6 +6O2

8 Photosynthesis The only part of the plant that produces food is the green leafy part Glucose-sugar Excess sugar is stored in plants as starch

10 Respiration Aerobic Respiration-chemical reactions that use OXYGEN to break down food and release energy. Oxygen (6O2) is used in this reaction to break down glucose (C6H12O6) into waste products (6CO2 and 6H2O) and energy.
