Acknowledgments Rugby Australia (Rugby AU) acknowledges and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as the oldest living continuous culture in this world and pays respect to First Australians’ ongoing connection to the lands and waters of this country. Rugby AU would like to thank Leisa Hicks, Keira High School, AECG, NSW Department of Education Aboriginal Unit and the Illawarra Aboriginal community for their input into the development of all classroom content for Deadly 7s.

Lesson One The Deadly 7’s program is a new national program by Rugby AU. This program had three parts to it: In the classroom, out on the field and then a carnival. In the theory component of this program students will learn the following: The importance of attending school and attaining a good quality education. Living a healthy lifestyle. Connecting to culture. How to have a positive relationship in your life.

An Introduction Did you know?
Australian Indigenous culture is the oldest continuous living culture on the planet tracing back nearly 60 thousand years. Many English words derive from Aboriginal languages, for example: barramundi, dingo, kangaroo, koala and wombat It is estimate that before colonisations around different Indigenous languages were spoken in Australian. The Aboriginal way of living was through Dreaming, spiritual connections with the land and strong family ties. The Aboriginal flag was designed by the artist Harold Thomas, a Luritja man of Central Australia in 1971. The Torres Strait Islander flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok, a Torres Strait Islander man of Thursday Island in 1992 Mark Ella captained the Wallabies for 10 Tests and was the first Indigenous Australian to captain a national sporting team. David Unaipon an Indigenous Australian author and inventor is features on the Australian $50 dollar note. Cathy Freeman won gold in the 2000 Olympics in the 400m sprint. The first Australian Test team of cricketers, selected for a Tour of England in 1868 were all Aboriginal players. Lloyd McDermott was the first identified Aboriginal person to play for the Rugby Union Wallabies in 1962 and was also the first Indigenous Barrister Storytelling, dance, painting and ceremony are important elements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures Indigenous Australian have close ties to the land, which mean a duty to look after it. Sacred sites include waterholes, burial grounds and rock art

Physical Health Physical Activity- is any sort of movement by the skeletal muscles that help us burn up the energy we get from food we eat. Some examples include: walking, running or playing a sport. Physical Activity can be a part of family activities, games and sport, playing with friends and getting to places. Physical Activity is important for children because: It keeps you fit and healthy. It helps you to stay in the healthy weight range. It helps with strong bones and muscles. It can help with a positive self-esteem. It can provide us with social skills to make positive relationships.

Symbols / Totems TOTEMS: are symbols that acknowledge specific birds, animals, rocks or flora species and are considered sacred by their owners. Traditionally each person receives a totem from their Mother and Father which would have previously been owned by his/her parents ancestors. These totems were then carved into a rock and the person would carry this around with them to be connected to their ancestors, the land and his/her tribe. Totems were extremely important in all individual and group celebrations, ceremonies and showed great loyalty to the past.

Message Stick The message stick is an ancient form of communication. no words were used only pictures and symbols to convey a message or story. Traditionally these were made and crafted from wood and were generally small and easy to carry. Message sticks was the best way to communicate as there was over 200 Aboriginal languages. Message sticks are still used today.

Stories Kurtley Beale currently plays for the Wallabies and NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby. Lloyd McDermott was first identified Aboriginal person to play for the Wallabies and the first Indigenous Barrister The Ella brothers, Mark, Glen and Gary all represented played for the Wallabies with Mark being the first Australia Currently there are 3 Aboriginal players contracted in the Australian Rugby Unions Sevens team with hope of playing in the Olympic squad for Rio 2016, these players are Mahalia Murphy, Taleena Simon and John Porch
