Imagine that you had to give instructions on how to use a patient database in a hospital:

You could use simple instructions using the imperative Click on the appropriate tab Enter the search criteria Click on the Find button

Or you could use more complex instructions: to + infinitive (answers the question WHY?) Click on the appropriate tab to find patients To start the search, click on the Find button by + -ing (answers the question HOW?) Find patients by clicking on the appropriate tab Start the search by clicking on the Find button

You could also use time words: First, click on the appropriate tab Then (After that / Next), enter the selection criteria Finally, click on the Find button

Or you could use the structures: Having done / Once X has been done Having + past participle Having clicked on the appropriate tab, enter the search criteria Having entered the search criteria, click on the Find button Once + (something) + has / have been + past participle Once the selection criteria have been entered, click on the Find button Once the search has been completed, close the program
