Skill Focus The skill for this week is...... Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader (e.g., created through the use of dramatic irony) create such effects as suspense or humor. Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.

Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis
Under “My Definition,” write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below “My Definition” under “Synonym” write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under “Antonym” write two words that are opposite.

Vocabulary Analyze: breaking down information with supporting evidence. Suspense: excitement caused by wondering what will happen. Humor: the quality of a literary or informative work that makes the character and/or situations seem funny, amusing, or ludicrous.

Vocabulary Cultural: relating to the beliefs, social practices, and characteristics of a racial, religious, or social group. Literature: written works having excellence of form or expression and ideas of lasting and widespread interest.

Vocabulary Point of view: is the perspective from which things are considered, which shows the opinion, or feelings of the individuals involved in a situation. First person P.O.V. involves the use of either of the two pronouns “I” and “We”. Second person P.O.V. uses the pronoun”you”. Third person P.O.V. uses pronouns like “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”, or a name.

Anticipatory Set In Antigua, people speak of slavery as if it had been a pageant full of large ships sailing on blue water, the large ships filled up with human cargo—their ancestors; they got off, they were forced to work under conditions that were cruel and inhuman, they were beaten, they were murdered, they were sold, their children were taken from them and these separations lasted forever, there were many other bad things, and then suddenly, the whole thing came to an end in -from A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid

The word “emancipation” is used so frequently, it is as if it, emancipation, were a contemporary occurrence, something everybody is familiar with. Textual Evidence The passage is written in third person. The narrator speaks of the occurrences in Antigua as one who knows about the history and how this history has impacted the people of Antigua. The narrator also seems to be apart from those people, in that he/she makes ironic connections that seem to be outside of the scope of the Antiguan people. “people cannot see a relationship between their obsession with slavery and emancipation and the fact that they are governed by corrupt men.”
