1 Business English February 1, 2018
On a sheet of scratch paper, identify what part of speech the word in gold is in each sentence: My uncle Jimmy was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He served during the Vietnam War, and was injured shortly before he returned home. He received a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for his service. After leaving the Army, Jimmy completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Arlington. My grandmother and grandfather attended his graduation and were very proud. Jimmy is one of the most accomplished people I know. You would never know that he still has many problems associated with his service in the war. Anyone who meets him can’t help but think, “Wow! What an amazing person!”

2 Announcements Please check to be sure that you have completed 30 minutes of Membean for the week. If not, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to complete that outside of class. You need to have read through chapter 6 in Capital Gaines by Monday. We will discuss it on Monday, and you will have a test over it next Tuesday. If you need to borrow a book, you may, but if you damage it or lose it, you will have to pay for the book.

7 Sentence Forms Subject – Verb – Adverb

8 Sentence Forms Subject – Verb – Direct Object
Direct Object – a noun of noun phrase (a person or thing) that is the direct recipient of the action of a verb. When you write a sentence with a direct object (DO), make sure that the DO receives the action of the verb.

9 Sentence Forms Subject – Verb – Indirect Object – Direct Object
Indirect Object – a noun or noun phrase (person or thing) that is affected by the action of a verb, but is not the direct recipient of it. In this sentence structure, an indirect object explains to whom or to what the action is being done. The indirect object is a noun or pronoun, and it comes before the direct object in a sentence.
