“Tricky Moon Phase Diagrams”
1.
3
2. Which phase describes the appearance of the Moon at position P when viewed from Earth?
Position P represents the waning crescent moon phase. (D) The position after it is the new moon, so the position before it has to be waning crescent.
4
3. When viewed from Earth, which phase of the Moon will be seen when the Moon is at point C?
Position C must be the first quarter Moon. (A) Position A happens to be the new moon, Position E is in the full moon so if you know your order, C must be the FIRST QUARTER
5
4. Which phase of the Moon will be seen when the Moon is at point E?
Look at where the Sun is coming from. Position A we cannot see the Moon, so it is a NEW moon. Since E is on the opposite side of the new moon, it must be the FULL MOON. (B)

Eclipse Foldables Cut along the SOLID line as shown.
Fold the DOTTED line. Glue the rectangular outline. Place the cut and folded paper on a plain sheet of white paper. Copy the notes.

Solar Eclipse Notes: Definitions
Penumbra: The lighter part of the shadow. It is larger than the umbra. Umbra: The darkest part of the shadow. It is cone shaped. Total Eclipse of the Heart song
8
Solar Eclipses During most months, the moon travels a little above or below the suns plane in the sky During a Solar eclipse the moon blocks light from the sun, preventing the light from reaching the Earth Two to four times a year it is on the same plane and an eclipse occurs Solar eclipses can be only be seen along a narrow path in the sky They are NOT safe to watch
9
Solar Eclipses The Solar eclipse occurs during the new moon phase and only if the Moon passes between the Earth and the sun. The sun, moon and earth are specifically lined up during a solar eclipse. The order is: SUN ---- MOON --- EARTH
10
- Moon blocks Sun from hitting Earth

Actual Solar Eclipse Partial Solar Eclipse: Sept 1st, 2016 – in Africa
Next Total Solar Eclipse in N. America – August 21, 2017 (visible in Kentucky) *It will also be visible in our area, but as a partial solar eclipse*
12
Lunar Eclipses During most months, the moon goes near the Earth’s shadow, but not quite into it The moon’s orbit is tipped 5° to Earth’s orbit. Most of the time its above or below our orbital plane Two to four times a year it is on the same plane and an eclipse occurs Lunar eclipses can be seen anywhere on the night side of the Earth They are safe to watch
13
Lunar Eclipses The Lunar eclipse occurs during the full moon phase and only if the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's shadow. The sun, earth and moon are specifically lined up during a lunar eclipse. The order is: SUN ---- EARTH --- MOON
14
- Earth blocks Sun from hitting the Moon
Lunar Eclipse - Earth blocks Sun from hitting the Moon Penumbra umbra

Actual Total Lunar Eclipse
16
Last partial lunar eclipse (in Europe, Asia, Africa) – September 16th, 2016 and Feb 11th, 2017
Next eclipse will be Aug. 7th 2017 – visible in New York
17
ECLIPSES…. When the sun or the moon is completely or partially blocked from view. Total solar eclipses are the most rare and dramatic.
18
Thinking Question: ** Compare both diagrams: Which eclipse would be seen by more people on Earth? Moon blocks Sun
