1 NEWS Mrs. Guenther’s Grade 3 Class! What We’re Learning…
February 2017 NEWS Important Reminders From My Desk to Your Home It’s hard to believe that we are in February already! We have been working very hard in our reading, writing and math skills. It amazes me that your children teach me JUST as much as I teach them. I am continually privileged to work with such fabulous students! Thank you for your continued support in being your child’s teacher! Mrs. Guenther Feb. 3rd  Sledding with our Carepartners Feb. 8th 100th Day of School/ Skating in the PM Feb.14th Valentine’s Day Feb. 17th Spirit Day: Wear your Favourite Colour Feb. 20th -24th February Break Writer’s Workshop We have been using the Expanding Expression Tool to enhance our descriptive writing pieces. What We’re Learning… Reader’s Workshop We are currently working on the strategy of inferring. We’ve been putting on our detective caps and inferring what’s happening in our daily read-alouds as well as our own texts. Inferring is the ability to use what one knows in combination with clues from the text to figure what is happening, going to happening, how a character is feeling, etc. Valentine’s Day We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14th. We will have our regular schedule in the morning, then have some time in the afternoon to share Valentines and spend some time with our care-partners. If you would like to provide something as a special treat for our class, please let me know by Friday, February 10th. Math We have been working on our addition and subtraction of numbers to We have explored basic addition strategies (i.e. using doubles, making ten), related facts, estimating, and 2 & 3-digit addition. We will now be looking at 2 & 3-digit subtraction, as well as word problems. Continue practicing adding and subtraction at home. Using the extra practice sheets that have been sent home is a good place to start. Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. ~Chinese Proverb

Other Subjects: Science – We have just begun our Magnetism and Static Electricity Unit Social Studies – We’ve completed our Children’s Right Unit and are beginning our Communities: Needs and Wants Unit Health – We have completed our Safety unit and are moving on to our Healthy Bodies/Immune System Unit Phys. Ed. – We are completing our Ed. Gymnastic Unit and moving onto Basketball skills and drills. Parents can help develop math skills no matter what their child’s age by exploring the math in the world around them. Here are some things that you can do at home to help your little learner excel in math and help them for their future. Give your child many chances to count and measure: Read a recipe and have your child measure the amounts for the ingredients. Use different measures such as teaspoons, cups, and liters. Using a calendar, count by 7’s and then 1’s to find the number of days until an upcoming event. Plan a meal you’d like to cook together, then make a shopping list for items that fits your budget. If you bring some vegetables home from the store, have your child count them, counting on from the number of vegetables you already have. Find creative ways to measure: how many paper clips long is this sheet of paper? How many hands high is the dog? “Math is like going to the gym for your brain. It sharpens your mind.” ~Danica McKellar February Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 29 30 31 1 2 3 Sledding with our Carepartners 4 5 6 7 8 100th Day of School/ Skating in the PM 9 10 11 12 13 14 Valentine’s Day 15 16 17 18 19 20 Winter Break 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28
