1 Buddhism

2 Aim: Does Buddhism offer a way to find happiness?
Do Now: Answer the following two questions. What do you want to learn from your teachers? What are some things your teachers cannot teach you, even though you want to learn about them? Why can’t they?

3 Directions…Clear your mind
Sit in a comfortable position, hands resting gently in your lap, back straight, eyes gently closed and just become aware of your breathing, breathing slowly in and out. Gradually try to slow your breathing while making each breath as deep as possible. 1. How did this feel? 2. What hindered you in participating?

4 Four Things Siddhartha Saw & Four Noble Truths
When Siddhartha went outside for the first time he saw the following… He saw an old man. He had never seen an old person before. He saw a sick man. He had never seen anyone unwell before. He saw a dead body and relatives weeping around it. He had never heard of anyone dying. He saw a holy man. He had never seen a holy man before. He spoke to the man who told him that he had left his home, his friends and his family and was wandering from place to place trying to find the meaning of life. Siddhartha’s four basic principles or Four Noble Truths are: The Noble Truth of Suffering: Life is suffering. The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering: Suffering is caused by desire. The Noble Truth of the Cessation [Stopping] of Suffering: To end suffering, one must end desire. The Noble Truth of the Path: To end suffering, follow the Eightfold Path.
