1 The TUNDRA Today I will learn about the Tundra because I need to know the characteristics that scientists use to classify the biomes.

2 General Description: The Tundra is so cold that trees do not grow.
The layer of soil just below the surface soil stays frozen all the time called PERMAFROST. The tundra is much like the desert because it does not receive much precipitation.

3 Location: The tundra is located at the North and South Pole.

4 Climate and Precipitation:
Summer: 12 degrees C (54 degrees F) Winter: -26 degrees C (-15 degrees F) Average yearly Rainfall: 30 to 50 cm

5 Plants: Lichens Moss Arctic Willow Tufted Saxifrage

6 Animals: Polar Bears Arctic Fox Wolverine Snow Bunting Arctic Hare

7 Adaptations of Animals and Plants:
Animals that live in the tundra usually have white fur to camouflage them with the snow. Also many of the birds migrate in the winter months. The plants are able to survive with very little water and are able to withstand high winds and very low temperatures.

8 Human Impact: Due to hunting and over development of land, humans have caused the extinction or near extinction of several Arctic species. Human pollution and over consumption is also causing great damage to the Arctic ecosystem.
