1 THE GOSPEL OF JOHN Week 1 – John 1: 14-18

2 The theme of John’s gospel
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” “Dwelt” means he pitched his tent.

3 Hebrews 2: 17 - “For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

4 Hebrews 4: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

5 Can we really know that He was God?
John gives us 3 important statements, and they’re tied to 3 words - clear evidence that this is God. First word - Glory Second word - Grace Third word - God

6 God, who became flesh, displays divine glory
God, who became flesh, displays divine glory. Verse 14 says, “and we have seen his glory.” GLORY But then there is his manifest glory. Exodus 33 says, “What kind of glory is this? This is God’s nature, God’s essence, the eternal complex of all that He is, the all-glorious God, manifest in blazing light.”

7 Grace v “full of grace and truth” Notice: Grace and truth are together - they have to be together, because the only way we will experience grace is by believing the truth.

8 Grace (continued) v “for from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.” (Literally - grace after grace) Romans 5 - Paul says, “In this grace we stand.” Grace keeps coming at us because we have chosen to believe the truth. God says to Paul, “my grace is sufficient” Hebrews says, “come to the throne of grace”

9 Grace and Truth came through Jesus Christ.

10 God v “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.” “No one has seen God” Why? Because He’s invisible - there are times where God has appeared as smoke, fire, etc., but He has no form.
