2 Program schedule This month’s classes are divided into two halves of nine class days each. Session A: February Session B: February 19 – March 1 You’ll get a separate grade at the end of each session.

3 First day of class (Session A):
Classes begin Tuesday, February 5. Meet in front of Building CE5 at 8:45 am to get your class schedule. Classes begin at 9:00 am.

4 Presidents’ Day holiday
Monday, February 18 is a holiday in honor of the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. No classes will meet.

5 Class Schedule (Monday-Friday) Conversation & Culture 9:00-10: American Culture OR English for Science & Technology 10:30-11: Speaking/Listening 12:00-12: Pronunciation/Vocabulary OR Business Writing (Levels D-F only)

6 Class Schedule (Monday-Friday) Business English 9:00-10: English for Business Topics 10:30-11: English for Business Communication 12:00-12: Pronunciation/Vocabulary OR Business Writing

7 Class choice form: CC: Fill out the left half of the form
Class choice form: CC: Fill out the left half of the form. BE: Fill out the right half of the form. If you are in one of these groups, you do not have to fill out this form: • Shibaura Institute of Technology • Tokiwa University • Kwansei Gakuin University • Toyo Gakuen University

8 Class choice form: If you will be here for the whole month of February, you will be in the same class for both sessions.

9 Textbooks You will need textbooks for most classes.
Your teachers will tell you the names of the books you need. You can buy your books at the UCI Bookstore (“The Hill).

10 Class levels for CC: Level A: Beginning Level B: High beginning Level C: Low intermediate Level D: Intermediate Level E: High intermediate Level F: Advanced

11 Class levels for BE: No separate levels You must be intermediate level or higher. If your score on the placement test today is too low, we will place you in Conversation & Culture.

12 Part-time students If you have a tourist visa (not a student visa), your class hours must be less than 17 hours total per week. If you are a part of your university’s group, your classes are already chosen. You don’t need to do anything. If you’ve already told your class choice to Student Services, you don’t need to tell us again.

13 Grading for both CC and BE:
You’ll receive letter grades in your classes. A = 90%-100% B = 80%-89% C = 70%-79% Failing = below 70% D = 60% - 69% F = < 60%

14 Attendance Policy Please attend class every day so that…
You will learn as much as possible. You won’t have any visa problems. You will receive a certificate at the end of the program.

15 Lateness Policy Less than 15 minutes late = Tardy (Late)
15+ minutes late = 1 hour absence 3 Tardies (Lates) = I hour absence More than 14 hours absence in 4 weeks OR More than 7 hours absence in 2 weeks = No certificate. Possible dismissal.

16 Reminder: Smoking is not allowed anywhere at UCI.

18 Placement Test Part 1: Listening (20 questions)
Part 2: GVR (80 questions) (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading) Write with a pencil (not a pen). Please do not write in the test book! Mark your answers only on the answer sheet.

19 Write your name with your family name first.

20 To mark the correct answer, fill in the whole space with a pencil.
