2. Begin the search for the literary theme
What is the story really about?
Read the title.
Get an initial sense of the topic and it’s relation to life.

3. Look for a unifying idea within the story as you read it.
Identify events that define the topic or connection to real life.
What do you think is the topic or connection, so far?

4. Seek out central ideas such as:
The struggle against nature/society
The bonds of family/friendship
Making sacrifices pays off
All humans are equal & have needs
Love conquers all
Overcoming adversity/challenges
Losing someone or something

5. Identify the characters’
Actions
Words or dialogue
Think of how words and actions affect, change, or create the big picture/main idea/theme.

6. Think about the impression the main idea or theme has on you.
Reflect upon what point the author tries to make, and how effective the story was at making that point.

7. Perceptions or Generalizations about LIFE Dealing with Human Existence
Explaining/describing common human experiences
Like a fact/theory/opinion about life
It is NOT:
Hidden meaning, Moral, Lesson, nor Genre
