1 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
Making Energy at the Cellular Level

2 Photosynthesis The process by which autotrophs (plants) convert sunlight to a usable form of energy (food)

3 What does this look like?

4 The Equation! CO2 + H2O--- --->C6H12O6 + O2
Carbon Dioxide + Water ---Sunlight---> Glucose + Oxygen And YES….you do need to memorize it!

5 Where does this occur? In chloroplasts, where chlorophyll (a pigment) absorbs light energy

6 Chloroplasts in an Onion

7 Cellular Respiration Once the food (glucose) is created, we need to break it down to release the energy…this is Cellular Respiration 2 Types of Respiration Aerobic = with oxygen Anaerobic = without oxygen

8 What do you notice about this equation??
The Equation C6H O2 ----> CO2 + H2O + ATP What do you notice about this equation??

9 Where does this occur? The “Mighty” Mitochondria!
The powerhouse of the cell

10 Some other pics

11 Glycolysis The first step in both types of respiration
It is the breakdown of glucose to get energy Glyco- = glucose -Lysis = to break

12 Aerobic Respiration Once glucose is broken down, the process continues in the mitochondria Oxygen MUST be present 2 sets of reactions: Kreb’s Cycle Electron Transport Chain Final number of 36 ATPs from ONE glucose!

13 Anaerobic Respiration
When Oxygen supplies are gone, we have to switch to Anaerobic 2 Types Alcoholic Fermentation Lactic Acid Fermentation Either type only produces 2 ATP molecules (Aerobic = 36 ATP)

14 Alcoholic Fermentation
Alcohol & Carbon Dioxide are produced as by-products Yeast go though this to help bread rise and make wine/beer Only produces 2 ATPs!

15 Lactic Acid Fermentation
After long periods of exercise, we often “feel the burn” of lactic acid This build up is a result of having to go through Anaerobic Respiration Produces only 2 ATPs!

18 Let’s Review! What is photosynthesis? What is the formula?
Process by which plants make food What is the formula? CO2 + H2O –SUN C6H12O6 + O2 Where does this process occur? Chloroplasts What is cellular respiration? Breakdown of glucose to release energy

19 More Review Where does Cellular Respiration occur?
Mitochondria What are the 2 types of Respiration? Aerobic & Anaerobic What are the 2 types of Anaerobic? Lactic Acid & Alcoholic Fermentation

20 Any Questions? That’s All Folks!
