Warm-up (6 min. – No Talking!!)
Complete the investigation Read the directions First 4 min. work independently no talking Last 2 min. discuss results with your neighbors Be prepared to explain your answers in class
2
Good Morning!! Be seated and quiet BEFORE the bell rings.
Have homework out to be checked

6-3 Rate of Change & Slope Describe what rate of change means
Find the slope of a line from a graph or table Find the slope using the slope formula
6
What is rate of change? Rate of Change = change in y change in x
Rate of Change = dependent independent
7
Table of Computer Rentals
What is the rate of change?
8
Graph of Computer Rentals
1)Describe the graph. 2) What is the rate of change between Day 1 & 2? Day 2 & 3? 3)What do you notice about the change?
9
Rate of change of linear data
All points fall on a line so we call the data LINEAR. The rate of change will ALWAYS be the same between any two points on the same line. You can also use a graph to find the rate of change.
10
Roads have different rates of change/steepness.
Which would you say is the steeper road? How do you know? High Rd. Easy street
11
Rate of Change = SLOPE of a line
Dependent variable (numerator = rise) Independent variable (denominator = run)
12
Slope Between Two Points
Find the change by counting on a graph.
13
Slope Between Two Points
We can also use our formula: (4, 3) and (-1, 1)
14
Find the slope of the line.
A B. (-2, 1) and (5, 7)
15
Special Lines: HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL LINES
Graph each line & find its slope using rise/run. A. (1, 2) & (4, 2) B. (4, 2) & (4, -1)
16
Compare and contrast Horizontal B. Vertical
slope is slope is undefined
17
Exit Ticket Sketch each of the following on the same coordinate plane
Line with positive slope Line with no slope Line with a slope of 0 Line with a negative slope
18
Slopes of Lines
19
Airplane Landings Which axis represents the x-values (independent variables)? Which axis represents the y-values (dependent variables)? Find the rate of change. What does it represent?
20
Moving Automobile Which axis represents the x-values (independent variables)? Which axis represents the y-values (dependent variables)? Find the rate of change. What does it represent?
21
Word Problems (You can do it!!)
Find the rate of change for each function. 1) A baby is 18 inches long at birth and 27 inches at 10 months. What does the rate of change represent? 2) You drive 30 miles in 1 hour and 120 miles in 4 hours. What does the rate of change represent?
