1 NC Governor’s School 2014

2 What is Governor’s School?
6 week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students The academic environment thrives upon the intellectual curiosity of students Discussion-based classes No tests, no grades Visiting speakers, performances, exhibitions, fieldtrips, optional seminars, and film series Social and recreational events compliment the academic focus

3 Who can go? Teacher nominations or self-nominations
All students must have high (92nd percentile or above) achievement and aptitude test scores in addition to other strict eligibility guidelines GPA, class rank, test scores, and the student’s application are considered by the Scholarship Committee

4 Who can go? continued… The Scholarship Committee reads all applications and essays to choose school representatives. Those selected by the Scholarship Committee will be sent to Wake County Wake County chooses the nominees to be sent to the state selection committee *A limited number of students can be nominated in academics; more can be nominated in the arts*

5 When and where is Governor’s School?
Salem College and Meredith College June 15th, 2014  July 23rd 2014 Must commit to the entire 6 weeks, including weekends (except July 3rd-6th)

6 Timeline Please follow the Cary High School timeline for the Governor’s School application process NCDPI’s timeline will be different

7 Important dates Test Form and Intent Form due 9/30 Testing
Application Deadline 10/18 Auditions (Th. Arts, Vis. Arts, Soprano Voice, Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, & Saxophone) 10/31 State Auditions 2/15/14 Notification (from NCDPI) 3/13/14 Submit Accept/Decline Forms 4/1 Governor’s School 2014 6/15- 7/23

9 Testing Testing will be on October 2nd. Come straight to Student Services at 7:15, if you are testing. I must have your signed Consent for Evaluation Form on file in order to test. Your achievement testing correlates to your chosen curriculum area, so you must decide this by September 30th. Let your 1st and 2nd period teachers know that you will be testing on October 2nd! If you are self-nominated, I will contact you about testing through your second period teacher.

11 Teacher Recommendations
This is your responsibility! TWO recommendations are required One should be from a teacher in your chosen area of study The second should be a teacher that can speak to your academic performance Pay attention to the very specific guidelines NO ENVELOPES It is your responsibility to check with teachers to ensure these are completed Fill out the top 2 lines of each recommendation form first in black ink (or typed)

12 Applications Pay very close attention to application guidelines!

13 Expectations Meet deadlines- no exceptions
Communications will be through your school - check it and respond promptly Follow all directions in the packet Students chosen for Governor’s School are considered to be the most responsible students in the state, so it’s important for you to demonstrate this quality
