October Nutrition Services defines food as local when it is grown or raised within 200 miles of Saint Paul. Below is a map that shows our local 200 mile radius. October is National Farm to School Month! National Farm to School Month was designated by Congress in 2010 to demonstrate the growing importance of farm to school programs. Eating local helps to improve our nutrition, support local farms and businesses, and educate us about the origins of the foods we eat. RIDDLES I am round, blue and little. I grow on bushes. I am one of the few fruits that is native to North America. What am I? (Answer: Blueberry) I am a fruit with a hard center pit. I begin with the letter “P”. When you dry me, I make a tasty snack we call a prune. What am I? (Answer: Plum) Farm to school is a WIN-WIN-WIN – students win, farmers win and the communities win! Farm to school empowers students and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities. -MN Department of Education Joke: Why was the jack-o-lantern afraid to cross the road? Among the local items that we purchased last year were: Apples, Potatoes, Carrots, Watermelon, Zucchini, Cucumbers, and Beets! We purchased 362,0592 pounds of fresh, local apples in ! Did you know? It takes about 450 trees to grow that many apples! Classroom Activity: You Are What You Eat Contest Students create a “self-portrait” using only fruits and vegetables to draw themselves. Afterwards have the students explain why they chose the foods they did.
