All benefitted from the social dynamism which came during this period.

United States The dominant Empire of the era
Financially stable due to the aftermath of World War l Germany could not pay Britain reparations for war. America created a loan scheme for them(Dawes Plan) The paid countries would now pay United States for war debts.

Golden Twenties – annees folles
The second half of the 1920’s Also called the ‘crazy years’ in France and Canada Modernity became a new ideal People began exchanging technologies for traditions. Cars, radio and moving pictures became a new standard everyone wanted to meet

Jazz Age 1920’s also called the jazz age because of the development of jazz music and dancing. Fashion changed to accompany this new development in the musical arts. The frill which was a significant piece of fashion was out of style.

Economy An era of great economic prosperity
The US economy boomed with the introduction of new consumer goods Europe did not start to flourish until 1924. African Americans recent immigrants and farmers did not benefit from the economic boom. Most lived below the poverty line.

Great Depression The Great Depression started in the 1920’s and went over into the 1930’s. The hope of economic prosperity after World War 1 reverted into economic hardship after 1920’s.

Women’s suffrage August 1920 saw the finalization of Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote. Women’s rights movements became motivated to go after other equalities. The 1920 woman was a ‘new’ woman who was less interested in the social service. NWP fought politically to enhance women’s rights at work etc.

Lost Generation Young people who came out of World War 1 disillusioned and cynical about the world. Also applied to American literary notables who lived in Paris at the time. Ernest Hemingway was a part of this generation hence the way he writes. These authors wrote literary pieces expressing resentment towards the materialism and individualism of the area.

Expressionism The average American became enamoured of wealth and everyday luxuries. Literary critics used the opportunity to write satirically about the hypocrisy. Painting in Europe was a means of expressing the inner emotions. (surrealism)

Fashion Young women’s fashion became a trend and social statement
The Victorian way of life was neglected Women were rebellious (flappers) The corset was tossed aside for the knee length dresses which exposed legs and arms The hairstyle of the day was the chin length bob

Other fashion trends Cosmetics which was not accepted in the American society, became extremely popular. Women began to find their inner powers.

Literature A period of Literary Creativity.
Descriptions of sex became exciting to the human mind. (DH. Lawrence – Chatterley’s Lover) The Sun Also Rises was one of many notables during the era.

Other countries - Spain
Pamplona was a favourite of Hemingway who loved the 1920 bullfighting festival of San Fermin. He used the bullfight as a symbol of the brutality of war juxtaposed against a cruel beauty.

Paris Jake lives in Paris
Many Americans went to Paris to seek opportunities from the newly developing economies and to benefit from Literary booms.
